UL harnesses thermal simulation to support certification decisions

For years, the use of thermal simulation has helped make electronic devices safer, more reliable and more efficient. At 6SigmaET, we’ve long been at the forefront of this trend, introducing new technologies and innovations to ensure that our simulation tools are faster than any other products on the market.  
 
This week, the role that simulation — and 6SigmaET — has played in improving product safety was officially recognized, with UL announcing that it will be using simulation-based tools for the first time as a route to certification. 
 
Working in close partnership with 6SigmaET and our German distributor Alpha-Numerics, UL’s new service helps customers employ digital modelling tools to support the certification process while delivering greater product insights, more innovative designs and reduced time to market. The modelling and simulation service also harnesses the power of UL's longstanding model verification and validation process to establish the credibility of a computational model. 
 
This decision represents a clear endorsement of the power and accuracy of thermal modelling, and its ability to reduce test time within the laboratory environment. We believe that this move will also give the industry confidence in the use of modelling and simulation techniques and help our customers to further extend the value of our tools. 

Thermal simulation for UL certification 

UL has been using simulation models for a variety of purposes for some time. However, they have strict requirements to ensure the simulation results are accurate. UL worked with Alpha-Numerics on a pilot thermal simulation project and were able to demonstrate that 6SigmaET met the criteria for certification.  
 
Some of the criteria for the thermal simulation software used for UL certification include:  
 

  • Setting up a thermal simulation quickly using existing detailed CAD data 
  • The software must be able to create modelling objects of electronics to accurately model their thermal properties including detailed PCB models 
  • Accurately define boundary conditions  
  • Fast grid generation 
  • Solve times for large and complex models must be reasonable 
  • The software needs to be able to present simulation data clearly for a UL Verification and Validation report
